As the traditional home of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, Maryborough and Surrounds has a long and fascinating history. Visit the 700 year old Aboriginal Shelter Tree, or incredible Aboriginal Rock Wells, dug into the sandstone just south of Maryborough, and discover the stories of our Indigenous heritage.
Relics of the early days of European settlement can also be uncovered and the wealth of the gold rush from the 1850's means that the region now benefits from the incredible architecture of that time. Wander the streets and enjoy the new life many of these buildings have taken on, with heritage treasures now serving as cafes, museums and shops, as well as many retaining their original purpose after all these years. If you have an interest in genealogy, make use of the resources found at many of our museums and historical societies.
