During the gold rush of the 1850s and 60s, more gold nuggets were discovered in Dunolly and the surrounding district than anywhere else in Australia. The allure of gold still brings prospectors from far and wide trying to find their fortune.
Today, Dunolly’s attractive main street, Broadway, is lined with kurrajongs and gold rush architecture. Stroll along Broadway, call into the museum, step into the grand Town Hall and 19th century theatre, and then enjoy a bite to eat from the award winning Dunolly Bakery. If cycling is for you, then get on your bike and ride the Dunolly Cycle Tracks: a series of signed forest roads and tracks of varying length between 14 and 47 kilometres.
An easy drive north and you’ll discover the bushranger hide outs at Melville Caves, or to the east try your luck fishing on the Loddon River and kayaking at Laanecoorie. Dunolly is a perfect base from which to explore and get to know the hidden treasures of Central Victoria.
