Castlemaine, Maldon and the surrounding villages all experience a temperate climate, signified by mild summers, cool winters and low rainfall year-round.

Summer high temperatures are usually around 30°C although increasingly days above 40°C are experienced especially during January and February. Summer nights can be cool, dropping to around 10°C. During winter morning frosts can be a common occurrence, while on average the temperature doesn’t get much above 12°C and overnight temperatures below zero are not unexpected. If camping during winter prepare for the cold. Equally, if planning to camp during summer months check conditions as there may be restrictions on camp fires or open flame cooking equipment, or danger from bushfire.

The winter months on average experience the most rain, and this often falls as showers or storms rather than persistent drizzle. The average annual rainfall is less than 600mm.
