If you’ve just got an hour or two to immerse yourself in the beauty of the region, why not explore one of the many short tracks or circuits that are perfect for families of all ages and people of all fitness levels. With charming short trails in Newstead, Maldon, Taradale as well as through the picturesque bushland surrounding Castlemaine, these are ideal for a morning or afternoon out in nature.
Campbell’s Creek trail runs linear from Castlemaine, along the creek to the playground at Campbell’s Creek, and is approximately 4 km of track. A great little walk or bike ride for the whole family, you can stop along the way to look at flood plains, animal life and native flora.
Kalimna Tourist Road is a 1.6 km circuit in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park. Wander through Grey box and yellow gum trees; coffee bush and wattle shrubs and, depending on the time of the year, discover wildflowers of every colour. See Milkman’s Gully and the Devonshire Mine and imagine a time when miners spent long days in this area seeking their fortune.
Another scenic walk is the Kaweka Wildflowers Walk, an easy 30-60 minute walk in Kaweka Reserve. The best time of year to enjoy the wildflower display is late Autumn and again in August.
