The region has forged a strong reputation in the arts. The wealth of the gold rush days set the pace and inspired a wave of refined artistic pursuits ... instrument makers, musicians, craftspeople and artists have shaped the area's creative identity, and continue to this very day.

This abundance of art is a boon for visitors; there’s not only one of Victoria's most prestigious regional galleries, Castlemaine Art Museum, but also many artists’ studios in Castlemaine, Maldon and Newstead that are often open to the public. Cascade Gallery in Maldon and Falkner Gallery in Castlemaine are highlights!

Fossick for treasures in densely stocked vintage stores and on-point fashion boutiques, listen to jazz over a glass of wine, stroll through the monthly Artists Market or wander the stunning galleries dotted across our towns - you might very well discover an up and coming artist to add to your collection!

The region is home to a number of significant events such as the Castlemaine State Festival and the Maldon Folk Festival. Be sure to check the Events Calendar to time your visit and take in a memorable event.

But if you just rock up to town any old weekend you’re guaranteed to see excellent live music, the latest arthouse and blockbuster films at the historic and rejuvenated Theatre Royal, and a wide variety of musicians at many other local venues.
