Get active with your nature loving Mum

Pack a picnic and get lost in nature!

Of course our pick for the best views and walks is our namesake park, Mount Alexander Regional Park/Leanganook. Enjoy bushwalking, picnics, lookouts with stunning views and a chance to see some of Australia's iconic wildlife. For a more relaxed walk with amazing views over the region, we suggest checking out Langs Lookout, which is a short walk from where you can park your car. There are many more walks in the Park for every fitness level, and for the wildlife lovers, keep your eyes peeled for Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Black Wallabies, as well as an abundance of native bird species.

Up in the Mountain Bike park, La Larr Ba Gauwa, you will find Harcourt’s best kept secret, a fairytale like oak forest. With Mother’s Day falling in Autumn, this is the perfect time to visit this beautiful location. The forest is perfect for a stroll and a picnic while feeling like you’ve been transported to Europe. Enjoy being surrounded by oak trees turning the captivating shades of red, yellow and orange as they prepare for the winter.

Where to get a picnic? Pop in to Harcourt Produce & General Store and choose delicious house baked cakes, pies and pasties, and a selection of local produce and beverages.

Bon Appetite to your foodie Mum

Being a region full of inspiring produce, it is of no surprise that we also can cater for the most discerning foodie matriarch! Forming part of the Central Victorian UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy designation, our region has some of the most passionate gastronomy enthusiasts around. Here are three of our picks for world class dining in the region.

Table et Terroir brings a taste of France to regional Victoria, with Chef Cedric Bricnet – originally from Lille – and partner Clare Shamier providing good food with good company at this restaurant. The cosy tables offer glimpses of historic Maldon outside while you feast on perfectly curated seasonal set menus inside.

Celebrate the regions best farmers, producers and winemakers at Wild, located in the heart of Castlemaine, in a gorgeously fitted out historic Fire Station building. The flexible menu is based around sharing plates and enjoy a casual drink while watching the world go by.

Founded by locals Loudon Cooper and Alexander Marano, Bar Midland is a love letter to the state of Victoria and stands as a blueprint for the future of sustainable dining. Their menu focuses on dining that is sourced, grown, and produced within the state of Victoria. Book a much sought after table in their dining room to enjoy the monthly changing set menu or enjoy cocktails and snacks at the Radio Room in the historic Midland Hotel.

Cheers to the Mum's who love a tipple

Of course, we finish with the Mum’s who love (or need!) a tipple. There are plenty of choices for Mum, why not take them on a tasting tour through the Goldfields! Kick things off in Castlemaine with the lovely folks at Boomtown Wine. Located in the bustling precinct, The Mill, winemaker Tim Sproal sources his fruit from around the region to create both blends and single-estate wines. Check out their very funky warehouse space with pop up restaurants and great vibes.

Next find your way to multi award winning (over 500!) wine at Harcourt Valley Vineyards. Harcourt Valley is the oldest vineyard in the region, producing some of the area’s best wines, currently rated as a 5 star winery by James Halliday. Slow down and take it the beautiful views of Harcourt with its beautiful tasting area, a common local venue for weddings and functions.

While you’re in Harcourt, pop into the newest cellar door at the Lome/Bress winery. Previously two separate wineries, these two labels under one roof mean more variety and diversity for your wine loving Mum. They might have even spotted their Bress label in the latest episodes of Master Chef!

Then take the final stop at Sutton Grange Winery. Sutton Grange Winery has cemented its position as one of Australia’s finest wine producers. Join them for a Cellar Door tasting on the weekend, and you might get the chance to try a drop of their award winning 2018 Estate Syrah. Seated tastings are also available to experience nine wines across their Fairbank and Sutton Grange range.
