Then make your way to Water Wheel Vineyard in Bridgewater, open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm. At Connor Park Winery, you can sample bold varietals crafted from the region’s rich soils, they’re open weekdays from 10am to 5pm and weekends from 11am to 5pm (just give them a quick call before visiting). Black Wallaby Wines and Newbridge Wines welcome visitors by appointment for a quiet, handcrafted tasting experience.

Many of the region’s country pubs also serve local wines and craft beers, best enjoyed in a sunny beer garden surrounded by spring blossoms.

When La Trobe University Outdoor Education students and staff developed the Serpentine Creek Canoe Trail, they remarked on the extraordinary abundance of birdlife, the largest they had seen anywhere in their travels.
