Overview

Explore the wonders of Bendigo’s natural world this July with a series of immersive nature events designed for all ages. These workshops and guided walks offer a chance to discover the fascinating lives of local wildlife, from nocturnal mammals and native birds to bats and winter flora. Participants will learn about animal behaviour, habitat conservation, and how to support a healthy environment, with hands-on activities and expert-led discussions.

 

Nature by Night

Dates: Thursday 10 July & Thursday 17 July
Time: 5:30pm – 7:00pm
Location: O'Keefe Rail Trail, Wilkie Road (between McIvor Hwy & Trotting Terrace)
Join a guided nocturnal walk to spot Bendigo’s creatures of the night, including possums, gliders, owls, and insects. Using spotlights and thermal cameras, participants will learn about the ecology and calls of these animals.
Suitable for: All ages (children encouraged)
What to bring: Enclosed shoes, warm clothing, torch or head torch, binoculars (optional)

Winter Wander

Date: Saturday 12 July
Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
Location: Junortoun Flora & Fauna Reserve (meet at Wilkie Road trail entrance)
Enjoy a slow-paced walk through Bendigo’s winter bushland. Discover wildflowers, mosses, lichens, and observe local birdlife. Includes nest box checks and plant identification.
What to bring: Enclosed shoes, weather-appropriate clothing, water, binoculars (optional)

Bats of Bendigo

Date: Tuesday 15 July
Time: 10:00am – 11:30am
Location: Rosalind Park – Pine Lawn near the fernery
Learn about Bendigo’s bat species, including the Grey-headed Flying Fox and microbats. View bats through binoculars and enjoy bat-themed arts and crafts for children.

Evening Bat Fly-Out

Dates: Tuesday 8 July & Tuesday 15 July
Time: 5:00pm – 6:30pm
Location: Rosalind Park – Pine Lawn near the fernery
Join a twilight talk on Bendigo’s bat diversity, followed by a short walk to the Dai Gum San Chinese Precinct to watch the Grey-headed Flying Foxes take flight.

Nature in the Mall

Date: Thursday 17 July
Time: 11:00am – 2:00pm
Location: Hargreaves Mall
Drop in to explore interactive displays and learn about native plants, animals, and sustainable living. Activities include a scavenger hunt and information on frogs, birds, reptiles, bats, and energy efficiency.
