Picnic with the platypus at river-side Axedale. This pretty township by the Campaspe River is proud of it famous residents, so much so it commissioned a two-metre platypus sculpture by Bendigo- based artist Yvonne George. Look out for the artwork by the water.

The river reserve also features picnic tables and easy walking paths for some rest and relaxation under gorgeous river gums. Throw a fishing line in and try your luck with the redfin. Take a table or pull up a barstool at the Axedale Tavern. This family-friendly country-style pub is serving traditional fare daily.

Axedale is the half-way point between Bendigo and Heathcote, just a scenic 20-minute drive from either side. It’s also a favourite stop-off along the O’Keefe Rail Trail, a 49-km safe cycling and walking track that follows the historic former railway line.
