Cycling and running events have been at the forefront of Bendigo life since the Bendigo International Madison was first held in 1972. Since then the hotly-contested event has been challenging local, national and international athletes with world-class competition and a passionate crowd of spectators. Be part of the action – on or off the Tom Flood Sports Centre track – during the long weekend in March.
Set your own rhythm on the O’Keefe Challenge. Run, walk, cycle or roll the historic O’Keefe Rail Trail between Bendigo and Heathcote in April. This 49-km journey celebrates fitness, nature and family fun, plus Heathcote’s infectious community spirit. The path of the original 1888 railway takes you through box ironbark bush, scenic farm land, over the Campaspe River and past Lake Eppalock. It’s a great way to see the region, plus sets the scene for this popular race across the goldfields.
Meet your wine-loving match at Balgownie Estate in March at The Grapest 5km Run. With the catchphrase ‘sip happens’, this unique fun run will have you stopping in your tracks to sample the winery’s wares at tasting stations along the route. The scenic vineyard is seriously beautiful, but that’s where the formalities end. Dress up, have fun, stay for the after party, or maybe even longer in one of the estate’s beautiful bell tents.
Join more than 2000 locals in November and help raise funds for the Bendigo Hospital on the Bendigo Bank Fun Run. It’s the largest annual fitness event in the city and with plenty of course options ranging from 5km to 21km, it attracts all ages and levels of fitness. The route takes you past some of Bendigo’s iconic attractions, such as View Street, Rosalind Park and Lake Weeroona, making it a unique way to experience the sights.
If the words ‘fun’ and ‘run’ are a natural fit for you, plan to visit Bendigo during one of the city’s running, walking or cycling events.
