Hearty Winter Dishes Are Good For The Soul

... you can’t argue against that.  There’s nothing better than indulging in your favourite comfort food or drinks, especially in the cooler months, to warm you from the inside out.

So in light of the cooler months that feel like they’re here to stay, and being formally recognised as a Creative City of Gastronomy, what better way to bring the two together than a list of some of Bendigo’s favourite hearty dishes.  Best of all most of them are available dine in and take away.  They’re scrumptious, full of flavour and will want you coming back for more. Osso Bucco @ Wine Bank on View

With Bendigo’s largest selection of regional wine on offer and a heritage-listed bank building to house it, there is so much to love about Wine Bank on View.  Not only can you make your way through their incredible wine list, you can sit in the comfort of their leather lounge and enjoy their open fireplace roaring through winter.  When it comes to winter dishes, check out their specials board.  Our pick, their osso bucco complete with local white wine, a creamy mash and your choice of wine. Yes please!

Hearty Soup @ The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery & Cafe

Nothing says winter like a hearty soup.  One of our favs has to be from The Good Loaf.  They make a delicious homemade soup full wholesome goodness served alongside their award-winning sourdough bread. Yum! And if that’s not enough, you can also pick up some of their sourdough bread, pies and sausage rolls – top picks for us are the Moroccan lamb pie, Thai chicken Sausage Roll and the scrumptious pumpkin bloomer. Added bonus, they’re all available for takeaway too!

Redgum Flame Cooked Meat @ The Woodhouse

At Bendigo's award-winning steakhouse,The Woodhouse, you'll find the natural smoky flavours and aromas of meat cooked over redgum, set within a contemporary menu and positioned next to an open fireplace on a cold winters evening the perfect combination. You honestly cannot go wrong when it comes to picking something off their menu, it's full of regional produce and specially sourced by Head Chef and owner Paul Pitcher.

Now who doesn’t love a country pub meal?  Don’t get us wrong, we love a chicken parma or a Sunday roast, but the guys at The Old Boundary Hotel are kicking goals when it comes to their slow cooked beef cheek.  You know it’s going to be good when the meat just falls apart.  Are you drooling yet? Plus this gorgeous pub has an open fireplace and some sweet desserts to finish off your meal.  And if you love what they do and want more, check out their sister pub, The Lake View.  It’s a ripper!

If you’re chasing aromatic flavours Malayan Orchid is the place to be.  With an outstanding menu it’s hard just to pick one, but their Thai coconut curry is a crowd favourite that everyone will love.  If you’re a wine lover check out their extensive range of local wines, just another beautiful way to warm up a winter’s day.

If there was a quiet achiever amongst the bunch Bay Leaf Food Store is it.  This gorgeous family owned sand run café offers Greek inspired dishes sure to keep you warm day and night.  Think homemade goodness on a plate.  A must if their arnaki kokkinisto… slow cooked lamb shoulder, seasonal veg paired with potato mash and goats curd. Delicious! Plus it’s available for pick up, take away and delivery. Try it, you’ll love it!

Bendigo is home to a lot of amazing cafes offering great coffee and food, but we love the fresh approach and spin that the team at Old Green Bean put on a tasty dish and make it their own.  A new item to their winter menu is their sticky beef cheeky. We’re talking slow cooked beef cheek, roasted Dutch carrots, mash potato and gremolata. Yum! And if that’s not enough, they roast their own coffee beans, available in store and to take home to enjoy later.
