In fact, in 2019 Bendigo and the extended region were officially named Australia’s first UNESCO City of Gastronomy. So, all things fresh, lovingly grown, handmade and nurtured runs through our veins. What can we say, we just love our produce, food or beverage.

Source Fresh At Farmers Markets

Fresh produce, does it really get any better?! If you want to know exactly where your food is coming from, support local and regional producers, meet and chat to the passionate people behind your food, there is no better place then at your local farmers market. 

For us, it’s the Bendigo Community Farmers Market. Held every second Saturday at the Bendigo Pony Club from 9am – 1pm on the corner of Breen and Belle Vue Road, Golden Square. Can’t hang out that long or need a top up? Why not head to their weekly mini market every Thursday from 2pm – 4.30pm at The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery & Café, 404 Hargreaves Street, Bendigo.

Fill Up Your Baskets At Providores and Green Grocers

They’re all about celebrating and sharing fresh quality food with the community. Both are incredible businesses and must visit if you’re a lover and supporter of fresh produce, treats, greenery and gifts.

Greg and Mandy of Edwards Providore love purchasing direct from the farmgate and are always very seasonal. Their gorgeous providore and café is located in Kennington and offers the best of local produce and deli items, sweet treats, beautiful Australian made homewares, posies of fresh flowers, take home meals, and a seasonal café menu to melt in your mouth.

Daz and team at Bendigo Wholefoods have been gathering goodies for over 30 years and showcase more than 100 producers and farmers from the Bendigo and Central Victorian region. They’re a wholefoods greengrocer, edible garden nursery and a wholefoods kitchen café! They’ve got everything from local, global, organic, deli, health, vegan, bulk, super food, growing food, food for fun and more.

Both are great fossickers and championing the best of Bendigo’s freshest produce.

Meet Our Winemakers

Did you know that Bendigo and Heathcote are home to one of Australia’s oldest wine regions? With over 50 cellar doors to choose from, there are plenty of reasons to get acquainted with a drop of the regions finest. With the region filled with small boutique, family owned and run wineries, you can expect to meet the makers, taste straight from the barrel, enjoy live music, eat great food and shop direct from the cellar door.

The Pâtissier & Winemaker

Husband and wife team, Lincoln Riley and Marsha Busse, are the proud owners of local fav Harvest Food and Wine. This sweet combination is one not to be missed and all located in the heart of Bendigo’s arts precinct on View Street. 

Their mouth-watering pastries are made by Michelin star-trained pastry chef, Marsha. Our fav is the almond croissant, only available on Saturday’s and you’ve got to be quick because they sell out fast! And Marsha also runs croissant making masterclasses sharing her passion, knowledge and love of pastries to others. 

And if you’re after a cheeky glass or even a bottle of North Run wine, be sure to ask for the Fleur Rose, lovingly named after their daughter.

The region is fast growing as a premium craft beer destination. With plenty of opportunities to meet the brewers, enjoy a crafty paddle of local ales or to just stock up for home, you cannot go wrong. 

Find small batch breweries and taprooms at Cornella Brewery, Palling Bros. Brewery and Tooborac Hotel & Brewery.  Or find craft beer on tap in a hidden beer garden at Handle Bar, in a laneway at The Dispensary or Hustler, and pub fav The Rifle Brigade Hotel. For takeaway options, The Hop Supply Co. are the best in the region.

Indulge With Sweet Treats

Everyone loves sweet treats right?! Three passionate Bendigo women are taking their sweet treats to the next level and all are hailed next level and loved by all. Handmade, indulgent and make the best gifts and treats to show someone you care or you just need a pick me up. So where can you find Bendigo's best sweet treats?

Bendigo Brittle. Known as Gold For Your Gob, owner Greta Donaldson's passion for brittle was inspired by her grandmother. It all began when she whipped up a batch of peanut brittle for family at Christmas that was a hit and it took off from there. You'll find Bendigo Brittle stockists all over town as it continues with popularity and the range continues to grow including macadamia, cashew, almond and more.  

Bluedbird Patisserie. A French-inspired patisserie that has been brought to life during the pandemic by owner Mynette Richardson. Just from the beautiful shopfront window alone you'll find a sea of colour, love and passion in each handcrafted dessert. What makes them even more special is the recipes have been handed down from Mynette's grandparents and tweaked to perfection. 

Induldge Fine Belgian Chocolates. Handmade indulgent chocolate is owner Hayley Tibbett's passion. You'll find an amazing range of fine Belgian chocolate products all loving made onsite in their Chocolate Lab. Watch as each chocolate is handmade daily including an infusion of local flavours and products, from Pink Museli to local Shiraz - yum!

Local Coffee Roasters

There’s no denying that Bendigo is a city that thrives on its coffee culture. And we’re so lucky to have such as awesome range of cool cafes to sip your favourite brews. 

Bendigo’s lucky enough to have two businesses roasting their own beans. Custom Coffees is regional Victoria’s first and premier coffee roaster, supplying many of our local cafes and restaurants. Old Green Bean are also roasting their own coffee in-house to produce a changing variety of single origin offerings.

For those of you who are serious coffee lovers, the team at Get Naked Espresso Bar are a dedicated coffee house offering a relaxed community coffee hub with passionate baristas. And the new kids on the block, Awaken Coffee, will get you sorted with an awesome caffeine kick start!

Hoo-Gah. Expect a seasonally changing menu that champions fresh, vibrant local produce in unexpected ways. They’re all about making comfort food for everyone.

Malayan Orchid. Their unique cuisine consists of their very own recipes made from only the best fresh ingredients, with seasonal produce locally sourced. Find exotic meats such as venison, alpaca and emu on the menu, an extensive wine list and so much more.

Masons of Bendigo. Their menu is continually evolving with the seasons and producer’s availability with Central Victoria’s best produce presented in a beautifully sophisticated way.

Ms Batterhams. With a Southern European inspired menu, produce is sourced locally and brought together to be shared around the table. Plus, they have an extensive wine list and beautiful bespoke cocktails.

The Woodhouse. From the moment you step into the restaurant you’ll find local meat hanging in the fridge, the menu highlights local and regional produce as does the drinks menu.

Our Artisan Sourdough Bakers

When it comes to freshly baked artisan breads, sourdough is our bread of choice in Bendigo. So much so, that two of our bakeries are thriving on the beautiful and award-winning sourdough breads and product range.

The team at The Good Loaf Sourdough Bakery & Cafe are devoted to their craft offering a beautiful range of baked goods that have a cult following; just ask about their pumpkin bloomer, corn tin, seedy sourdough or their classic ciabatta. Their bread speaks for itself and they love eating it fresh and with a classic spread of butter.

Local cafe Sim'R started baking their own fresh bread to use on their menu, but its popularity quickly grew and developed into what is know known as Wild and Tamed. You can enjoy their delicious range of breads in the cafe or you'll find it featured in cafes and restaurants throughout the region.

The Butcher

The team at Flora Hill Quality Meats are a family owned and run business located just outside the CBD. They’re all about providing and supplying quality meat and produce to locals. With their passion for quality produce, you’ll find an amazing range meats including the freshest grass-fed beef direct from their own farm, in addition to weekly specials including deli meats, seafood, salads, veggies, and delicious take home meals. And did you know, they’re one of Bendigo’s most awarded butchers?!
