There are plenty of places to trot out the tartan in Bendigo parks and gardens, so dig out that picnic basket and thermos for some quality time in the good old outdoors.

Wholefood Bendigo

Forage for supplies at the likes of Bendigo Wholefoods – a fresh food emporium offering a fun-filled romp through local produce. Pick fresh fruit from Harcourt orchards, sourdough bread from The Good Loaf and soft goats’ cheese from Sutton Grange, among other local favourites. Spread your rug under the elms in Rosalind Park. On summer days it’s a good ten degrees cooler in their shade.

For even easier takeaway options, take your pick of Pall Mall’s eateries then hotfoot it across the main street to enjoy your meal in the quiet company of possums.

Lake Weeroona has plenty of picnic tables with views of the water. Pick up flathead tails and beer battered chips to share under some of city’s loveliest lemon-scented gums. Or for a sweet treat take your pick of the icecream, handmade across the road. Other perfect picnic possies include Eaglehawk’s Canterbury Gardens, Kennington Reservoir and Bendigo Botanic Gardens. Think flora, fauna and the gentle flappity-flap of soft-fringed rugs on green green grass. Just glorious.
