First up, we have Rosalind Park, right in the heart of Bendigo. This park is a favorite for a reason: its lush, expansive lawns are perfect for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a leisurely picnic. With its beautiful flowerbeds, shady trees, and ornate monuments, you’ll find plenty to admire as you munch away. Don’t forget to visit the historic conservatory while you’re there – it’s a great spot for photos!
If you’re craving some lakeside relaxation, Lake Weeroona is where you need to be. There’s a playground and dedicated picnic/ barbeque area on Napier Street, followed by walking paths around the lake. This is a great choice for families and groups, and a popular choice for locals to get some exercise in. Nearby, you’ll find a range of cafes to treat yourself with a coffee and a bite to eat.
This park is the perfect location for family gatherings and picnics all year round. Tucked away in Bendigo suburbia, Crook Street Park offers green lawns, barbeques, public facilities, an all-abilities play space including a water-wise play space, walking paths and more. Plus nearby you’ll find sporting ovals, Kennington Reservoir for more picnic options and more.
For those who appreciate a bit of horticultural beauty, the Bendigo Botanic Gardens is a must-visit. This spot is a haven of greenery with diverse plant collections and the only remaining section of the Bendigo Creek in its original form. The picnic areas are well-maintained, and there’s plenty of space to spread out. The kids will love the adventure playground inspired by Alice in Wonderland, and you’ll love the peaceful vibe.
Kangaroo Flat’s Gateway Park is a quiet achiever offering a relaxed setting perfect for a casual picnic and a short walk around its bushland reserve. The space is ideal for nature lovers looking for somewhere close to the CBD for bird watching, has great facilities and a large carpark for easy access off the main road.
A hidden gem on the outskirts of Bendigo in Eaglehawk, this beautiful precinct is well worth the short venture out. The jewel in the crown is Canterbury Gardens with its ornamental gardens, in particular its collection of dahlias, palms and roses. A short stroll along walking trails will take you to Lake Neangar and Lake Tom Thumb. Kids will love the region’s largest play space inspired by Banjo Patterson’s poem Mulga Bill.
If you’re chasing ample space for your picnic, head out to Lake Eppalock. There are endless opportunities to spread out and great facilities including picnic tables, BBQ areas and toilets at the Kimbolton Recreation Area for a hassle-free day. Throughout the warmer months it’s spot on for swimming, boating, fishing and outdoor activities.
Nestled on the edge of Bendigo and surrounded by the Greater Bendigo National Park, Crusoe Reservoir & No. 7 Park natural bushland paradise for exploring. There are great walking trails between both locations for those looking for extended nature walks. Crusoe is perfect for twitchers and fishing, and a hidden pine forest perfect for a secluded picnic. No. 7 Park is a great location for a picnic lunch with a large wooden shelter, picnic tables and plenty of space to run around.
This picnic spot is a delightful surprise. Nestled by the Campaspe River in Axedale, it offers a charming little setting by the river. With picnic benches, tables and plenty of grassy areas, you’ve got loads of choices for kicking back and enjoying the surroundings. A wander around the area and you’ll discover Platypus Compass, the O’Keefe Rail Trail and a take the foot bridge to cross the river and explore further. If you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a platypus.
Well worth the visit, make the road trip to Heathcote’s Valley of Liquidambers. The area is filled with liquidamber trees offering plenty of shady spots to relax and spread out your picnic blanket. In late April it turns into a vibrant autumnal wonderland, perfect for photos and family fun. Wander a little further and talk the bush walk up to Viewing Rock or wander across the swing bridge and explore the Heathcote’s quaint shops, cafes and cellar doors.

Pick up fresh treats from the local award‑winning bakery to fill your picnic basket, then wander down to the river to settle in. When the day winds down, you can even stroll over to the nearby Bridgewater Hotel for a refreshing drink, rounding out a perfect day by the water.
For those seeking a quieter, more secluded picnic spot, Terrick Terrick National Park offers a peaceful escape immersed in nature. This striking landscape is known for its open grasslands, native woodlands, granite outcrops and seasonal wildflowers. Wildlife is abundant here too, with more than 100 bird species. Settle in at the Mount Terrick Terrick Picnic Area, where picnic tables, toilets and easy parking await, all framed by the impressive backdrop of Mount Terrick Terrick.
Pack a basket and head to Little Lake Boort, affectionately known as the Oasis of the North, where picnicking is a true pleasure.
