Join Dr Chris McAuliffe, Professor and Head of the Centre for Art History and Art Theory at the School of Art and Design at Australian National University, as he explores artistic responses to Elvis and how he redefined Modern Art. Dr McAuliffe has taught and written extensively on the relationship of art and popular music, and organised the symposium Tinnitus on art and rock music.
When the Elvis phenomenon hit our shores, many were influenced by the man, the myth, and the music. His records have spun in many a First Nations family home, more than one Blak Elvis has performed his hits in passionate tribute, and he inspired a classic 1990s Australian television show, Li’l Elvis and the Truckstoppers with its new genre of ‘Didge-a-billy’ music.
But other sides to the Elvis story can be conflicting for many First Nations people – in solidarity with African American artists, and with feminist and civil rights movements.
