Ross Taylor: Field notes currently on show at Bendigo Art Gallery is an ambitious new body of work by Central Victorian artist Ross Taylor. Exploring the landscape, history, people and architecture of Central Victoria and the forces that have shaped it through time, Taylor’s drawing-led practice considers the evocations and resonances of interior and exterior spaces through carefully composed images. Motifs both sacred and banal; of the ancient and the everyday are woven and spliced into layered and colour-drenched drawings. Vignettes of daily life are presented alongside moments recalled through memory, chance and the overabundance of visual media in contemporary life that competes for our attention.
Study For Landscape is typical to Taylor's preliminary sketches, in which he uses collage assemblage to develop a composition that will guide the final drawing. This particular sketch was constructed from documentation taken from Black Hill national park in Kyneton. The work serves to give the viewer an insight into Taylors working process and is a celebration of the local landscape that he continues to document.
