Overview
Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion opened at Bendigo Art Gallery on 12 November 2020.
The exhibition brought together garments and textiles by First Nations designers and artists from around Australia in the first-ever major survey of contemporary Indigenous Australian fashion.
Piinpi shone a light on Australia’s leading First Nations creatives, and a design movement that is fast becoming an internationally recognised fashion phenomenon. Featuring the work of Indigenous artists and designers from the inner city to remote desert art centres, Piinpi highlighted the strength and diversity of the rapidly expanding Indigenous fashion and textile industry. The exhibition attracted international attention, going on to tour in both Paris and Taiwan.
This catalogue looks at the beautiful garments showcased in the exhibition. It includes a foreword from the Bendigo Art Gallery Director Jessical Bridgfoot, Elder's Acknowledgment by Rodney Carter, an essay from the curator Shonae Hobson, designer interviews and spotlight biographies.
