The James and Greta Smyth Travel Fellowship has been established by Valerie Diamond through the Bendigo Art Gallery Foundation in 2016. The Fellowship has been established to provide international professional development opportunities for visual arts practitioners and students to gain experience, to develop networks and learn skills through exposure to the world's best cultural institutions and arts communities.
The value of the Fellowship is valued at $15,000 and is offered biennially.
About the Fellowship
Valerie Diamond was born and raised in Bendigo, she studied at the Bendigo Teachers’ College.
Valerie Diamond understands and appreciates the significance of overseas travel in offering students of the creative arts the opportunity to experience the rich history of art, craft, architecture and design in an international context. The Scholarship is intended to allow students a wide diversity of experience thereby enriching their own practice.
The Fellowship is open to young artists working in the greater Bendigo area, and to current third year, fourth year Honours and Post Graduate students currently enrolled within Fine Arts and Creative Arts (including Graphic Design) at La Trobe University, at the Bendigo campus. Recent graduates (up to five years) of a fine arts or visual arts course who reside in the Bendigo region are also eligible to apply.
The Fellowship will be awarded to an individual, although joint applications may be considered under certain circumstances. Inquiries should be directed to Bendigo Art Gallery prior to completion of the Application Form. Employees of City of Greater Bendigo, the organisers, and members of their immediate family are ineligible to enter.
The most outstanding applicant will be selected by a selection committee.
