Philip Wolfhagen is recognised as one of Australia's leading contemporary landscape painters. His paintings are inspired by the atmospheric landscape of Tasmania and the emotive qualities of light and weather. Wolfhagen has held over 45 solo exhibitions and his work is held in major public and corporate collections in Australia and in private collections nationally and internationally.
'I find the approaching gloom of night a visually exciting time; the mutability of light, and inevitable loss that brings on an urgency and serves to heighten all the senses. The fleeting moment when our perception of colour is almost lost, but the darker forms in the landscape take on a precise tonal weight, is an ongoing area of interest for me. Concept for a Secular Altarpiece no. 2 was painted in the autumn of 2022. This triptych is a solemn celebration of a landscape of great personal significance and a synthesis of many recurring themes in my work.'
This artwork will be on display in the 2023 Arthur Guy Memorial Painting Prize Finalist Exhibition from Saturday 25 November 2023 until Sunday 18 February 2024.
