Peter Graham
how to describe the shining, upon the dreaded loam, 2021
charcoal, gouache, graphite on cardboard
34 x 26cm
Artist statement
The drawing was made observing the inside of my face as if it were a mask, and thinking about how an artist might project itself like a ghost, incorporating within its incorporeal body the still-life of everything it sees, therefore enabling it to highlight the precise nature of the substance of the world, reflected in its own eye.
Artist bio
Peter Graham's work expresses the isolation of the self and the attempt to connect to worlds outside the body; considering the materials of art as analogous to occult mediums through which this connection is enabled.
Graham has been determinedly eclectic in regards to his exploration of ways of seeing, yet has consistently described the processes through which images come into being, through intense personal observation and his invention of stories and mythologies. He often incorporates many materials into a single work, and assimilates many multi-scaled works within broadly thematic groups. Peter Graham lives and works in Melbourne, Australia.
