Joel Arthur (b. 1990) focuses on the intersection of genre and mode in painting, fusing the genre of landscape with external elements such as still life models and irregular motifs to examine the relationship between abstraction and descriptive painting. His practice holds an interest in perceptual painting and European modernism, utilising pictorial devices that generate visual paradoxes and metaphor that resolve in an open reading. Arthur currently practices in Canberra/Kamberri and has exhibited in numerous exhibitions and prizes nationally, this year as a finalist in the Muswellbrook Art Prize (NSW), Waverley Art Prize (NSW) and the Freemantle Print Award (WA).
'Radiation is a reflection on journey, experience and transition. Progressing through life and absorbing the sensation of the pressures of the world around oneself as decisions are made to influence positive change. Radiation is the way events can diverge from a central point, how energy is emitted and the sending out of rays of light. This work could be read as surrounding spirituality but I like to think of this as nod to the truths and practicalities of the world.'
