‘What makes night within us may leave stars’
- Victor Hugo, 1874
Darkness serves as a powerful metaphor across popular culture, art and literature, associated with fear and danger, the unknown and unsettling facets of life. Delving into the inner realm of the unconscious, encounter ghosts, spiritual reflections, otherworldly creatures and haunting shadows in this selection of works from the Bendigo Art Gallery collection spanning half a century. Featured artists venture boldly into the darkness to confront fears, seek catharsis, and explore the human condition in all its complexity. Moving beyond the rational world, they mine dreams and memories to conjure surreal and fantastical visions, presenting darkness as a realm rich with startling contradictions and profound truths.
Featured artists include Hayley Millar Baker, Arthur Boyd, Polly Borland, Karla Dickens, James Gleeson, Robert Hollingworth, Tim Jones, Inge King, Tracey Moffatt, Nell, Sally Smart and Ken Unsworth.
