Drawn from the extensive archive of the John Kobal Foundation, Made in Hollywood is a celebration of Hollywood studio portraiture from the industry’s golden age, the period 1920 to 1960. From Greta Garbo and Cary Grant to Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, it is these portraits that transformed actors and actresses into international icons. In many cases these are the career-defining images of Hollywood’s greatest names and illustrate their enduring appeal.
John Kobal was a pioneer Hollywood historian, and one of the first to examine seriously the photographs taken to promote the stars and their films. The exhibition has been drawn from the extraordinary archive of the London-based John Kobal Foundation, created in 1990 at the time of the collector’s death. This exhibition marks the first time many of these vintage prints have ever been displayed publicly.
This exhibition is indemnified by the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria.
