A Bendigo Art Gallery collection display.
In recent decades, the body has shifted from being a subject of traditional portraiture to becoming an active presence in contemporary discussions around race, gender, history and identity. Body Politics draws on Bendigo Art Gallery’s permanent collection to bring together a multitude of voices that explore cultural shifts over the past 50 years, including multiculturalism, post-colonialism, feminism and nationalism.
The works in this space attest to the enduring significance of our contemporary artists, who continue to push boundaries and challenge dominant narratives through their art. Works by leading artists such as Emily Kngwarreye, Michael Cook, Abdul Abdullah, Petrina Hicks and Polixeni Papapetrou are included in this display.
