Tudors to Windsors: British Royal Portraits

Royalty has always used portraiture and imagery to promote and maintain power.
A visit to this exhibition from the esteemed National Portrait Gallery, London, provides the opportunity for students to learn about the power of the monarchy and their influence on shaping world history, including that of Australia. The exhibition focuses on some of the most fascinating historical figures of all times as well as some of the most admired British artists. With over 200 portraits spanning five centuries, this exhibition provides a unique insight into history, portraiture, fashion and photography.
Self – Guided Visits
School groups will need to self- tour through the exhibition. There is a free 10 minute introductory talk available to school groups prior to exhibition entry (subject to availability). Exhibition trails are also available for primary and lower secondary.
Suggested viewing time is 1 hour.

Discover the stories and faces behind five royal dynasties and some of history’s greatest personalities. Find out about techniques and materials used by artists in the sixteenth century. Learn about individual monarchs and their influence on British, Australian colonial (and world) history.
