Department stores began to be established in the late nineteenth century with their heyday from 1920 to 1960, when they were the store of choice for most shoppers. With the advent of the mall and more recently online shopping, traditional department store retail has suffered.

Mary Poulakis was appointed Managing Director at Harrolds in 2019.
