Hear from SOUL fury’s guest curator Nur Shkembi, independent curator and scholar of contemporary Islamic art, as she shares insights into the work of featured artists and connecting themes across the exhibition.
About the speaker:
Nur Shkembi is a Melbourne (Naarm) based curator, writer and scholar. Nur has produced and curated over 150 events, exhibitions and community engagement projects. She was part of the core team which established the Islamic Museum of Australia, serving as the museum’s inaugural Art Director, Exhibitions Manager and foundation Curator. As a museum curator Nur brought together artefacts, traditional art and contemporary art as a means for collective storytelling, subverting stereotypes and as a provision for the individual narrative.
Shkembi has served on numerous boards and committees including her appointment as a Commissioner for the Creative State Commissions and is currently serving on the board of un Projects. Nur is also undertaking a PhD in the Department of Art History at the University of Melbourne where she is investigating contemporary Islamic art through a neo-Orientalist and postcolonial lens. Nur is a member of a numerous professional visual arts and Art History bodies, and is a Fellow of the Centre of Visual Arts (CoVA) at the University of Melbourne.
