Picturesque landscapes and charming scenes of fashionable society have embedded a romanticised memory of fin-de-siècle Paris in the global imagination. But beneath the glamour lay many harsh social and economic realities.
Join us for a glimpse beyond the veneer, to encounter a city beset by deep-seated political divisions and social inequality. In this talk, Dr Ted Gott will illuminate antisemitic and misogynistic social attitudes of the time and share insights into the experiences of women, for many of whom sex work was a risky yet essential means of survival. He will consider shifting political and religious affiliations, the city's histories of violent civil unrest, as well as the impacts of alcohol, drugs, and poverty. Dr Gott will discuss the ridicule levelled at the first Impressionist exhibitions and the Eiffel Tower, today's venerated icons of French culture.
