Symbolism and Mysticism: Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, Phoebe Anna Traquair and Mary Seton Watts - Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau Artists in Scotland and England.
Speaker: Dr. Andrew Montana, Senior Lecturer, School of Art & Design, Australian National University.
Entwining Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau tendencies, the respective work of these three artists around the turn of the twentieth century is little known. As did Christian Waller, they fused sacred, mystical and secular symbols into their art. Inspired by the Daughters of the Sun exhibition, this lecture will assist situating Christian Waller’s work in an international context, and shed light on some significant commissions undertaken by these three British artists who preceded her. Refreshments provided.
Bookings essential, limited numbers.
