Mexican Folk Crafts
In this workshop children will get to learn a little about Mexico (Frida’s home) and make some traditional Mexican crafts. The first one will be a folk art mirror in the shape of a sun. For this craft children will use embossing tin and colourful markers. For the second craft tissue paper will be used to create Papel Picado (Mexican paper flags). These are traditionally made for festivals.

Holiday Workshops 8 – 14 years

Stories of the Sun - Printmaking
The sun appears as an important symbol in the art work of both Frida Kahlo and the Australian printmaker Christian Waller. To begin this workshop, participants will first view the exhibitions about these women and learn about some of the stories they told using the sun and other celestial symbols.
Once in the Gallery art space participants will create a sun design of their own. These designs may be inspired by the Art Deco movement like Christian Waller’s work or by Mexican Folk Art. Once the designs have been made participants will learn how to transfer their designs onto lino and cut the block using carving tools. When the printing plates have been made participants will get the opportunity to roll out the ink and print up their own original prints.
