Artist Minna Gilligan will present a workshop based in drawing and collage mediums. Firstly, Gilligan will guide participants through abstract mark-making techniques with low-fi materials such as markers, coloured pencils and pens. This drawing will form the setting or ‘scene’ for collage elements to exist amongst. Using old books from the 1960s and 1970s, participants will then select collage imagery, considering their own personal narrative communication amongst what they select. Traditional and contemporary composition techniques will be explored, with the end result being a vibrant ‘retro’ mixed media work.
About the Artist
Minna Gilligan works primarily with painting, drawing and collage. Her practice speaks of fleeting, personal encounters with the past and present, and manifests in a tumultuous reconciliation of both. Her works are playgrounds of colour, often inhabited by lone protagonists trapped in states of longing, sadness or exhalation. Though her paintings reference 1960s/ ‘70s psychedelia and evoke a nostalgic romanticism, her work exists in a utopian space of imagery filtered through the digital realm.
