H. Hansen’s composite photograph, Pioneers of Bendigo c. 1894 features 472 images of people who played pivotal roles in the establishment of Bendigo. From businessman JH Abbott, who funded a number of Bendigo’s institutions, to members of the famous Lansell goldmining family, it is a telling portrait of who held power and influence in mid-19th century Victoria. Recent research into the photographs, however, show that not all is as it seems – and some photographs do not represent the individuals they are attributed to.
