Michael is an epidemiologist-poet at Monash University, Bendigo. His poems reside in Cordite, Medical Journal of Australia, and elsewhere. This poem is a golden shovel after Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Everything Changes’. It was written in memory of Judith Carolyn Leach (1953-2020).

I like to explore the ways that the local fauna can interact with my artwork.
In this version, as these crimson rosellas land on the feeding dish it swings and an internal cog strikes the cylinder resulting in a deep gong, which resonates but doesn’t frighten the birds.

We need more superheroes in real life although our emergency service personnel are our true heroes in these times of crisis!
