Act I:

The villagers are excitedly preparing for the Harvest Festival, when Swanilda notices a beautiful girl sitting in the window of Dr Coppelius’ house. Swanilda and her friends try to get the attention of Coppélia, who unbeknownst to them is actually a mechanical doll crafted by Dr Coppelius, the Toy-maker and Alchemist.

Once celebrations of the Harvest Festival have come to an end, Swanilda and her friends take it upon themselves to sneak inside Dr Coppelius’ house to investigate the strange behaviour of Coppélia.

Act II:

Swanilda and her friends find themselves inside Dr Coppelius’ workshop with many strange figures, one is Coppélia. Swanilda discovers that Coppélia has no heartbeat and is in fact, a mechanical doll. Once uncovered, the figures are all revealed to be life-sized mechanical dolls. The friends cause a ruckus switching on all of the dolls and making them dance.

Dr Coppelius comes home to find the friends disrupting his workshop. Many of the friends escape, however Franziska is caught. Swanilda hides inside Coppélia’s doll box and disguises herself in the doll’s costume.

Dr Coppelius uses a sleeping potion on Franziska and wickedly attempts to take her spirit and put it into the body of his Coppélia doll. Not realising that Swanilda has disguised herself, Dr Coppelius is fooled and thinks his doll has come to life.

Franziska’s sleeping potion wears off and the friends return to help them escape, leaving Dr Coppelius to realise he has been fooled.
