As in most industries, climbing the ladder is taken very seriously by those doing the climbing. Those at the top watch who is climbing up behind them, as well as who they are trying to step over to get to the very top. The Arts Professional provides advice to hone skills and help participants flourish by embracing workplace culture, career pathways, ethical issues and introduces skills for developing, identifying and articulating abilities and attributes in order to achieve success with integrity.
Rob Sowinski is one of those magical theatre creatures that can most successfully slide into any backstage role. Having experience in all aspects of theatre make Rob a knowledgeable and creative asset to any Production.
Rob believes that collaboration for any production is generally a dialogue between the creatives. No matter which role he finds himself in, his approach is to have initial discussions with co-creatives then examine the piece through a wide range of research techniques. Rob brings with him the attitude that there is a freedom that comes from starting with no space and no budget as it often leads to the creation of exceptional work. The dialogue with the other creatives continues throughout the pre-production period, and frequently the direction broadens and shifts—often to the point where little remains of the initial concept.
Resident designer for Lyric Opera of Melbourne and Watch This, Melbourne's Sondheim Repertory Company; Rob has collaborated with a range of companies on national and international projects which have included Cabaret, Merrily We Roll Along, L'incoronazione di Poppea, Bad Jews, Company, Die Knef, Thank You for Being a Friend, What is the Matter with Mary Jane, Ned, The Trouble with Harry, Passion, Pacific Overtures, Assassins, Dogmeat, Iphigenie en Tauride, and Palace of the End.
Rob has received Award Nominations for Lighting as well as Awards for Set and Puppetry Design. His work also includes Production and/or Tour Management for Marina Prior, Macy Gray, Chita Rivera, Melanie Safka, Helen Reddy, Lorna Luft and Ben Vereen. He has taught at National Theatre Drama School and mentors design students for Monash University.
