Be immersed in the drama of myth and music as Bendigo Symphony Orchestra (BSO) performs two masterpieces of the orchestral repertoire.

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D and Gustav Holst’s The Planets suite ensure a concert bursting with energy.

Former concertmaster of the MSO Dale Barltrop presents passion and virtuosity in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D. Hailed as one of the greatest violin concertos of all time, this work revolutionised what the genre could be: not only a display of pyrotechnics, but a chance for the soloist to explore the depths of their musical artistry. From its idiosyncratic opening, to the sweet and intimate second movement, to a triumphant and thrilling finale, this work is a masterpiece from start to finish. Be swept away in the special connection between soloist and orchestra – by the concerto that redefined it.

Roman mythology comes to life in Holst’s The Planets suite. This whirlwind meet-and-greet with the ancient Roman deities presents their various astrological characters – powerful, boisterous, jubilant, serene – as musical movements. Its memorable tunes include Jupiter – bringer of jollity, now famous for its use in the British patriotic hymn I Vow to Thee My Country.

The suite is innovative not only in its orchestration, but in its unique form and concept. Experience the symphony as theatre – fresh and dramatic.

The BSO will adopt many faces as they bring Holst’s striking harmonies and textures to life. A universe of colour and rhythm waits to be explored in this symphonic pantheon.
