Music is a portal to new worlds. Be transported with Bendigo Symphony Orchestra (BSO) as their 2025 opening concert explores different galaxies and far-flung lands.
John Williams’ soundtrack for Star Wars has resonated with audiences across generations. Its iconic tunes can instantly conjure the thrill of adventure and spirit of heroism. In a spectacular start to the season, BSO performs the soaring love theme Across the Stars. Embrace your nostalgia for this classic tale of intergalactic triumph over evil.
BSO is joined by Australian oboist Joshua Oates for Graeme Koehne’s In-flight entertainment. Witness the possibility of the oboe – once traditional instrument of the shepherd – as Koehne unleashes it from its pastoral homeland and casts it into strange and foreign landscapes. In-flight entertainment is a cinematic journey of symphonic proportions. Its exploration of limits and blurring of genres will excite your imagination.
Dvorak’s New World Symphony straddles the composer’s excitement of discovery and longing for home. Written during a brief sojourn in the United States, it is a dramatic and heartfelt work infused with both Native American melodies and musical features of Dvorak’s own Bohemia. Its striking opening heralds new frontiers and trepidation in the face of the unknown.
This concert is, by ubiquity, an unofficial celebration of the oboe. This beloved instrument ties together the classics and new gems of this program with its magical sound. Its dark and enigmatic tone weaves a thread from Williams through Koehne to Dvorak, where it melts and soars in the famous Adagio.
Don’t miss this adventure in music.
